DALI LED Controllers – Advanced Smart Lighting

DALI System Architecture for LED Control

Standard

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is an international standard for digital lighting control, defined by IEC 62386. DALI-2 is the certification program managed by the DALI Alliance, introducing interoperability between devices, diagnostics, and support for input devices (sensors, switches). In addition, the D4i extension specifies requirements for “smart” drivers with built-in diagnostics, energy reporting, and luminaire data. The DALI bus uses two non-polarized wires, supporting up to 64 control gear devices per line, with up to 16 groups and 16 scenes stored in the drivers. With DALI-2, up to 64 control devices + 64 input devices can coexist on the same bus thanks to the concept of “instances.”

  • DT6: drivers with ON/OFF and dimming commands for LEDs.
  • DT7 (Switching Actuator): ON/OFF actuators for non-dimmable loads.
  • DT8 (Color Control) – advanced color modes:
    • Tc (Tunable White): warm/cool white adjustment.
    • XY Coordinate: color defined in the CIE 1931 space.
    • RGBWA / RGB + CCT: color + dynamic white using a single address.
  • DALI-2: certification ensuring interoperability and multi-vendor compatibility.
  • D4i: extended specs for DALI-2 drivers supporting diagnostics, energy reports, luminaire memory, and maintenance.

System Architecture

  • Master / Application Controller: sends commands, configures lines, manages scenes.
  • Driver / Decoder / Ballast: receive commands and drive LEDs or loads.
  • Control / Input Devices: sensors (occupancy, lux), DALI-2 switches, user interfaces.
  • Gateway / Bridge: integration with KNX, DMX, BACnet in hybrid systems.

Advanced Features

  • Multi-vendor interoperability: DALI-2 requires independent testing verified by the DALI Alliance.
  • Scalability with multiple lines: gateways enable multi-line and multi-universe expansion.
  • DT8 color management: modes like Tc, XY, RGBWA allow advanced color control with a single address.
  • D4i functions: diagnostics, luminaire data access, energy reports, predictive maintenance.
  • Integrated automation: fine dimming, groups, scenes with sensors and logic.
  • Backward compatibility: many DALI-2 devices remain compatible with DALI version-1.

Typical Applications

  • Premium residential: many high-end designer luminaires and chandeliers support DALI, enabling advanced light dimming and color control.
  • Offices, schools, corporate spaces: tunable white control, dynamic scenes, BMS integration.
  • Hotels, museums, retail: RGB/RGBW scenography, coordinated effects, scene management.
  • Architectural facades and exteriors: synchronized color and programmed sequences.
  • Urban and outdoor lighting: D4i-certified devices for monitoring and remote diagnostics.
  • Hybrid KNX / DALI / DMX projects: coexistence between professional systems and architectural lighting.

Available Types

  • Single channel (1CH): white or fixed-color LEDs.
  • CCT (2CH): dynamic warm/cool white.
  • RGB (3CH): three-channel color mixing.
  • RGBW (4CH): RGB + dedicated white channel.
  • RGBWA / RGB + CCT (DT8): color + dynamic white on a single address.
