LED Controllers – Bluetooth Mesh (BLE)

Bluetooth Mesh system architecture for LED control

Standard

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), in its Bluetooth Mesh extension defined by the Bluetooth SIG, is a decentralized wireless technology for lighting control. Each node (LED driver, sensor, controller) can relay messages to others, creating a reliable and scalable mesh network without the need for a central hub. BLE systems offer low power consumption and simple setup via mobile apps (iOS/Android) with direct pairing or QR code commissioning.

System architecture

  • BLE LED Controllers / Drivers: modules managing monochrome, CCT, RGB, RGBW, and RGBWA LED strips.
  • Mobile app (iOS/Android): enables lighting scenes, precise dimming, color adjustments, and time schedules.
  • BLE mesh network: each powered device acts as a relay, extending coverage without mandatory gateways.
  • Optional gateways: allow cloud integration and compatibility with external protocols (e.g., DALI, KNX, DMX).

Advanced features

  • Low energy consumption: optimized for battery-powered devices.
  • Scalability: from small residential setups to large corporate projects.
  • Variable interoperability: open solutions (Bluetooth Mesh SIG) or proprietary ecosystems.
  • Direct smartphone control: no extra wiring or dedicated hubs required.
  • Multi-protocol integration: via bridges to DALI, KNX, DMX, or cloud systems.

Most popular BLE platforms

  • Casambi: leading proprietary ecosystem, supports up to 5 channels (RGB+CCT), expandable to 6 channels (RGBWAU) via DMX bridge.
  • Silvair: based on the Bluetooth Mesh (SIG) standard, open and interoperable. Supports up to 5 channels with certified drivers.
  • BubblyNet: focused on building automation and energy efficiency, targeting offices and large spaces. Does not natively support 5CH (RGB+CCT).

Typical applications

  • Smart and premium residences: dimmers, strips, and designer chandeliers with color control and lighting scenes.
  • Offices and corporate spaces: dynamic scenes, occupancy-based automation, and daylight harvesting.
  • Hotels, retail, and wellness: immersive environments with lighting scenography and centralized management.
  • Architectural and museum installations: color effects, multi-channel synchronization, and space enhancement.
  • Industrial and large-scale projects: supported by the resilient mesh network and low power consumption devices.

Available types

  • Single channel (Dimmer 1CH): white or fixed-color LEDs.
  • CCT 2CH: dynamic warm/cool white adjustment (Tunable White).
  • RGB 3CH: multichannel color management.
  • RGBW 4CH: RGB + dedicated white for neutral rendering / CRI.
  • RGBWA 5CH (RGB+CCT): color + dynamic white for maximum flexibility.
