EnOcean LED Controllers | Batteryless Wireless Lighting Control

LED Controllers – EnOcean

EnOcean is a wireless protocol for building automation featuring batteryless devices powered by energy harvesting (light, motion, thermal). It typically operates at 868 MHz (EU), 902 MHz (NA) and 928 MHz (JP), offering low latency and ultra-low power.

System Architecture

  • Self-powered transmitters: battery-free switches and sensors (presence, lux, temperature).
  • EnOcean actuators/controllers: drive LED gear via 0–10 V, DALI or PWM depending on model.
  • Optional gateways: integration with KNX, BACnet, DALI or IP/IoT platforms.

Advanced Features

  • Minimal maintenance: no batteries → fewer interventions and lower costs.
  • Range: up to ~30 m indoors and 300+ m line-of-sight (environment dependent).
  • Scalability: suitable for offices, hospitality, retail and industrial projects.
  • Interoperability: multi-protocol integration through gateways.

Important Technical Note

EnOcean controllers do not natively support 5CH (RGBWA) or 6CH (RGBWAU). Usual configurations are 1CH, 2CH (CCT), 3CH (RGB) and 4CH (RGBW). For 5/6 channels, use DALI DT8 or DMX512 via gateway.

Comparison with ZigBee and Z-Wave

  • EnOcean: efficiency & sustainability (batteryless), sub-GHz bands; ideal for retrofit and low maintenance.
  • ZigBee (2.4 GHz): very wide ecosystem for smart home and mid-large projects; requires power/batteries.
  • Z-Wave (868/915 MHz): reliable, secure residential focus; certified ecosystem but smaller.

Typical Applications

  • Offices, hotels, schools, hospitals and wellness spaces.
  • Projects targeting low maintenance and energy use.
  • Retrofits without additional cabling.

Available Types

  • Single Channel (Dimmer 1CH): for white or fixed-color LEDs (red, green, blue, amber, UV, etc.).
  • CCT 2CH: tunable warm/cool white.
  • RGB 3CH: multicolor effects.
  • RGBW 4CH: RGB with dedicated white channel.
